SAAB Gripen Racing Take The Lead of the Championship in the S-RC Leicester Grand Prix

The S-RC Cup continued its inaugural Season 1 Championship at the Leicester Grand Prix, bringing together 10 school teams from across the UK for a full day of engineering, motorsport and competition at De Montfort University.

The event marked the final qualifying round of the first S-RC Cup season, with teams competing through Free Practice, Qualifying, a Shootout Sprint Race and the Grand Prix itself.

Designed to challenge students beyond the classroom, the S-RC Cup sees teams design, build and develop their own remote-controlled race cars, applying real engineering principles including vehicle design, testing, problem-solving and performance optimisation.

The Leicester GP delivered some of the closest racing of the championship so far.

Lawrence Sheriff School’s SAAB-sponsored Gripen Racing secured their first ever S-RC victory after missing out on the top step at the previous Sheffield GP. The team arrived with performance upgrades and immediately showed their pace, taking pole position in qualifying before converting that speed into a race win.

However, they were pushed throughout the event by their sister team, Velocity Vortex, previous winners at Sheffield, who finished just behind in second place after a closely fought battle.

The event also saw one of the closest finishes in S-RC history, with Torquay Academy’s Team Broome and City of Bristol College’s Absolute Zero Motorsports separated by only seconds at the chequered flag.

Beyond the racing, the event highlighted the engineering focus at the heart of the S-RC Cup. Between sessions, teams returned to the paddock to analyse performance, identify improvements and make changes to their cars based on track data and observations – demonstrating the same iterative development process used throughout professional motorsport.

“The Leicester GP was the first race where we saw significant upgrade packages – and honestly, it was brilliant to see. Teams were testing new motors, aero devices, and bodyshells, which shows them learning from testing and previous data, as well as thinking like real engineers.”

Pete Hewage, Founder and CEO – S-RC Cup

The S-RC Cup would like to thank De Montfort University for hosting the event and providing an outstanding venue, as well as all participating schools, teachers, volunteers and supporters who continue to help develop the championship.

The Season 1 Championship will continue with the next stage of competition, as teams continue their pursuit of the S-RC Cup title.

About S-RC Cup

The S-RC Cup is a UK-based student engineering motorsport championship where teams design, build and race their own remote-controlled vehicles.
