THE STORY
The mission of the S-RC Cup isn’t just a tagline — it’s personal. I’m Pete Hewage, the founder, and I’m speaking from experience.
I never planned to become an engineer. Honestly, engineering wasn’t even on my radar — until the JLR 4×4 in Schools competition came to my school. Some friends signed up, so I joined too. A few weeks in, our team’s engineer quit, and somehow, I ended up stepping into that role.
Driven by the desire to win, I learned more about engineering than I ever expected. In fact, some of the skills I picked up back in Year 9 through that competition are only now being taught in my engineering degree at a Russell Group university.
Then COVID-19 hit, and the JLR 4×4 competition was cancelled — never to return. That competition changed my life and opened the door to STEM for me. I don’t want today’s kids to miss out on the same chance.
That’s why I created the S-RC Cup: to bring that life-changing experience back, to inspire the next generation of engineers.
