Students from 11 school teams across the United Kingdom will travel to De Montfort University on Thursday 11 June to compete in the Leicester Grand Prix, the final qualifying round of the S-RC Cup United Kingdom RC Motorsport Championship Series.
Founded by University of Bristol engineering student Pete Hewage, the S-RC Cup is a national STEM competition that challenges teams of secondary school students to design, build, test and race their own F1-style RC race cars while developing engineering, teamwork and project management skills.
The Leicester Grand Prix represents the final opportunity for teams to secure their place at the National Final later this year. Throughout the season, schools and youth organisations have competed in qualifying events held across the country, making Leicester one of the most important rounds of the championship.
The event will feature wheel-to-wheel racing, engineering under pressure, team challenges and awards, giving students practical experience of motorsport and engineering in a competitive STEM environment.
The S-RC Cup has recently collaborated with Formula E through its Girls on Track programme, delivering engineering and motorsport workshops designed to inspire young people to pursue careers in STEM and motorsport.
“The Leicester Grand Prix is a crucial event in the championship as it is the final qualifier before the National Final. Students have spent months designing, building and refining their cars, and this event will determine which teams progress to compete for the national title. The competition gives young people the opportunity to develop real engineering, teamwork and problem-solving skills through motorsport.”
Pete Hewage, Founder & CEO – S-RC Cup
As well as racing on track, students are assessed on areas including engineering design, teamwork, project management and communication, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of modern motorsport and engineering careers.
Volunteer Staff are also students, most of them at a university level, with an eye to break into the motorsport industry themselves.
Media representatives are welcome to attend the event. Opportunities will be available to interview student competitors, organisers and volunteers, as well as capture racing action throughout the day.
